Week 5: Topics 1 and 2

Topic One:
1. What I found most interesting was that when GirlTalk remixes a mixture of songs and uses their sounds to make new music. But, even when remixing new songs out of old songs it is still infringing on copyright laws. An example from the documentary was “is art off limits?” (RiP) They are basically saying that when the future cannot use the past music to create new stuff, it suppresses creativity and when you suppress creativity, there is a lack of growth, and creates a static music community.
2. In my experience this is very similar to what we do in a lot of writing classes. When I write a paper I do research online and look for new facts and quotes to spice up my paper. Using other people's work, legally, can give a paper depth, instead of it being dull.
3. A concern I have with this documentary is that their is a fine line between using music and creating your own stuff and copying and selling music. I have grown up knowing stealing is wrong and that downloading songs off of the Internet for free is also a form of stealing. I believe that if anyone made music, or anything, they more than likely will want to earn money for it because what is the point of spending time creating something for nothing.
4. An artist I know of that has gone too far with his freedom of speech is Eminem. He is known for ending other artists careers based off of facts he knows about the other person. His biggest rap slam was the one about Mariah Carey and how she was a liar and that he had proof that they were previously in a relationship. That rap made her look like a fraud and it completely took his name out of her mouth. A group of people that went overboard with free speech are certain members of PETA. When they would pour red paint on leather bags and people wearing clothing made from animals. It is one thing to stand for something, but it is another to ruin property of another.
5. What actions should be taken in response to Eminem is that their are so many other ways to deal people than calling them out in front of basically the world. It is alpha-dogging and really not a classy way of dealing with people. What actions should be taken in response to certain PETA members are sticking with rallies or getting on the Internet and blogging about animal cruelty, not ruining other people's belongings.

Topic Two:
1. I believe actions by WikiLeaks can be useful because they are an honest look on what is going on around us, without being censored. WikiLeaks can also be extremely powerful. For example, the video shown in the TED talk this week about the US military shooting at innocent people in Baghdad. That can totally change how people view the military, which can impact the funding.
2. I feel somewhat concerned with the current state of free speech because I believe that transparency has become an issue here in the United States. For example, this last election was not transparent at all, both parties had various scandals come out, so neither party looked good. Nobody wanted to own their mistakes, which made it difficult as an American to use my vote to decide the fate of this country.
